New Moon in Virgo 2026: The Sacred Reset
September 10th, 2026 | 10:27 PM Central | 18°25′ Virgo
There is something deeply satisfying about a Virgo New Moon arriving in September.
The kids are going back to school. Summer is beginning to loosen its grip. The nights are getting longer. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, there is that first unmistakable feeling that autumn is coming.
And suddenly, after months of summer chaos, we begin craving routine again. This year, that feeling is especially potent.
On September 10th, the Sun and Moon meet at approximately 18°Virgo, creating our New Moon and beginning a fresh lunar cycle. And after the intensity of eclipse season, I don't think this New Moon is asking us to reinvent our entire lives. I think it's asking us to put ourselves back together intentionally.
What Does a New Moon Mean?
Astronomically, a New Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon meet at the same point in the zodiac, leaving the Moon essentially invisible to us in the night sky.
In modern astrology and witchcraft, the New Moon has become a natural point for beginnings, intention setting and planting the metaphorical seeds we want to nurture throughout the coming lunar cycle.
I personally love lunar rituals because they create rhythm.
Our ancestors across many different cultures observed the movements of the Moon, although there is no single universal ancient "New Moon ritual" that all witches historically practiced. The rituals we practice today are often a beautiful mixture of older lunar traditions, folk practices, modern witchcraft, astrology and our own personal spirituality.
And that's okay. Ritual doesn't have to be thousands of years old to be meaningful. Sometimes it is a simple as saying (or writing) “This is where I am. This is what I need. This is where I want to go next.”
The Virgo New Moon
Virgo is a mutable Earth sign ruled by Mercury. Virgo notices. It sorts, edits, organizes, repairs, studies, refines and tends. This is why Virgo energy is so often associated with our routines, work, health, habits, organization, service and the countless small things that keep our lives functioning. Virgo understands something that manifestation culture occasionally forgets.
You can light the candle, but eventually you also have to do the work.
And I LOVE that about this New Moon. This isn't necessarily the Moon for wishing upon a star and waiting for something to fall into your lap.
This is kitchen table witchcraft. A time to set intentions to clean your space, make the appointment, open the notebook, send the email, create the budget, go for the walk, finish the thing you've been procrastinating, or organize the drawer that has been pissing you off for six months.
Virgo reminds us that tiny acts repeated consistently become enormous changes.
But Watch the Perfectionism
There is, however, a shadow side to Virgo.
Virgo's desire for improvement can easily become an obsession with perfection. And there is a massive difference between asking
"How can I support myself better?"
and asking
"What is wrong with me that needs fixing?"
That distinction matters under this Moon. You don't need to become thinner, prettier, more productive, more successful, a better mother, a better partner, a perfectly organized human who drinks three litres of water, exercises every morning, answers every email and somehow keeps their house looking like nobody actually lives there.
You're allowed to be a person.
The Virgo New Moon isn't asking us to punish ourselves into becoming "better." It's asking us to examine whether the systems we've created actually support the life we're trying to live.
And This New Moon Comes After Eclipse Season
This part feels important. We've just moved through the August eclipses, including the Leo Solar Eclipse and Pisces Lunar Eclipse.
I don't personally recommend doing manifestation magic on eclipse days. Eclipse energy feels too chaotic and unpredictable for my practice. I would rather observe, rest, listen and allow whatever needs to surface to surface. But eventually eclipse season ends. And then we have to ask… Now what?
And this Virgo New Moon feels like the answer. The eclipses revealed. Virgo organizes what remains.
If something changed over the past several weeks, internally or externally, you don't necessarily need to understand the entire meaning of it yet. Start with what is tangible.
The Astrology Surrounding This New Moon
There is quite a bit happening around September 10th. Mercury, Virgo's planetary ruler, is leaving Virgo and entering Libra, shifting our mental attention from analysis and problem solving toward conversation, balance and perspective.
Venus is also entering Scorpio, pulling relationships, intimacy, desire, money and self worth beneath the surface.
And Uranus is stationing retrograde in Gemini, beginning a longer period of reconsidering changes surrounding communication, information, technology, ideas and the way we think.
Meanwhile, the Virgo New Moon itself forms a supportive sextile with Mars in Cancer. That Mars connection is one of my favourite pieces of this chart.
Virgo says “Make the plan.”
Mars says “Do something about it.”
Cancer says “Build a life that actually feels safe enough to live inside.”
This isn't productivity for productivity's sake. It is action in service of what nourishes us. Our home, family, body, emotional safety, belonging, the things we protect, the things we tend and the things that make life feel like ours.
Who Will Feel This New Moon Most?
Everyone has Virgo somewhere in their birth chart, so everyone gets a version of this reset. But people with important placements around approximately 14°–22° of the mutable signs. This is Virgo, Pisces, Gemini and Sagittarius. Y’all are noticing this New Moon particularly strongly.
Virgo placements may experience this as an especially personal reset. Pisces may notice shifts through relationships and the balance between self and others. Gemini and Sagittarius may feel pushed to reconsider structures, priorities or direction.
But rather than relying solely on your Sun sign, look at which house contains 18° Virgo in your natal chart. That is where this New Moon is planting its seed.
Virgo New Moon Ritual
I personally like doing my New Moon ritual close to the New Moon itself or during the first few days afterward as the Moon begins waxing.
You don't need every item listed here. Witchcraft has never required an expensive shopping list. Use what you already own, what grows around you and what feels meaningful within your own practice.
1. Gather Your Supplies
Gather everything you'd like to use for your ritual. You may want:
A journal and pen.
A candle.
A fire safe bowl or cauldron for burning your intentions.
Incense, smoke cleansing herbs or whatever you personally use to cleanse your space.
Crystals such as moss agate, green aventurine, amethyst, labradorite or selenite.
Plants, flowers or herbs from your garden.
For me, using plants from my own garden at this time of year feels particularly appropriate. We're nearing the end of summer and approaching harvest season, so bringing something I've personally grown into my ritual connects the magic back to the Earth.
For your candle, you could use green, brown, cream or white for the earthy Virgo energy. White is always appropriate and can be used in place of other colours.
2. Create Your Altar
Create a special altar space for the ritual.
Your altar doesn't need to be permanent or elaborate. It can be a table, dresser, windowsill or even a little space you've created on the floor.
Decorate it with whatever feels like Virgo and late summer to you.
Crystals.
Plants.
Flowers.
Herbs.
Leaves.
Feathers you've ethically found.
Candles.
Objects from your garden.
Something representing the harvest.
Anything that makes the space feel sacred to you.
This isn't about making the perfect Pinterest witch altar.
It's about intentionally creating a physical space where you can step away from everyday life for a moment and focus on your magic.
3. Cleanse Your Space & Set Your Intentions
Cleanse yourself and your altar in whatever way aligns with your practice. You might use incense, garden herbs, sound, visualization, prayer or simply open the windows and let fresh air move through the room.
Then take a moment to ground yourself.
You can use your own words or say:
“Mother Moon, I honour the cycles of darkness and light.
I enter this space with honest intentions.
I release what no longer serves me.
I welcome clarity, growth and renewal.
May I recognize the life I desire
and have the courage to participate in creating it.
I trust myself.
I trust my intuition.
I am ready to begin again.”
Now open your journal.
Write down your intentions and wishes for the lunar cycle ahead.
What do you actually want?
What have you been avoiding?
What needs more attention?
What would make your everyday life feel better?
Can you picture yourself actually living the life you're describing?
Virgo intentions might involve health and well being, movement, work, school, studying, organization, finances, routines, boundaries, home, creativity or finally dealing with something you've been putting off.
I still like using "I WILL" statements for this ritual.
Not because the universe is going to punish you if you phrase manifestation incorrectly, but because there's something psychologically powerful about moving from I wish to I will.
I will make time for my creativity.
I will prioritize rest before I reach burnout.
I will organize the spaces that are making my life harder.
I will give my body what it needs.
I will dedicate time to learning something new.
I will create routines that support me rather than punish me.
I will put consistent effort toward the business, project or dream I want to grow.
Manifestation isn't about convincing yourself that wanting something badly enough guarantees you'll receive it. It's about naming your desire and choosing to participate in creating it.
4. Light Your Candle & Burn Your Intentions
Now light your candle.
Take another piece of paper and write down your intentions for this new lunar month.
Write your goals. Then sit with what you've written. Read it and visualize it.
What would it actually feel like if these things began unfolding?
What would need to change?
What would you need to do?
When you're ready, carefully light the paper from your candle and place it into your fire safe bowl.
Watch it burn.
For this ritual, the burning itself is the symbolic act.
You have taken something internal. This is your thought, desire, hope or intention. And you physically released it.
Let the flame transform it.
5. Close Your Ritual
Now take some time for yourself.
Meditate.
Journal.
Pull some tarot cards.
Sit outside beneath the dark Moon.
Have some tea.
Have a glass of wine if that's part of your evening.
Listen to music.
Talk to the Moon.
Or simply sit quietly beside your candle.
If you've incorporated crystals into your ritual, you can leave them on your altar or take them to bed with you like I often do.
Before closing your ritual, thank whatever energies, ancestors, deities, spirits or simply the Moon and Earth you've invited into your practice.
Clean up your space when you're ready. And then comes the Virgo part, follow through.
The Ritual Doesn't End When the Candle Goes Out
This is probably the biggest difference between how I understand manifestation now and how I wrote about it years ago.
I don't believe manifestation means writing something down, burning the paper and waiting for the universe to deliver it.
The ritual is the beginning.
If you manifested a creative project, create.
If you manifested a healthier relationship with your body, listen to it.
If you manifested financial growth, make the plan.
If you manifested better boundaries, enforce them.
If you manifested rest, protect it.
If you manifested a dream, give that dream somewhere to land.
That's the medicine of Virgo. Magic and effort don't cancel each other out. They work together. But you do have to put forth tangible efforts.
After the chaos and beauty of summer, and the intensity of this eclipse season, September offers us another opportunity to begin.
Take everything you've learned with you. Leave behind what doesn't need to come. Set the intention, light the candle, burn the paper and then go build the life you just asked for.
Happy New Moon, witches. 🌑
