Walpurgisnacht - Beltane Eve
Happy May Eve (Beltane) aka Witches Night aka Walpurgisnacht. A pagan celebration, exactly halfway from (or to) Halloween. The veil is very very thin right now. Walpurgisnacht was at the time, a night to honour and rendezvous with other witches. Of course completely demonized by Christianity, it was said to be a night of demons and devils and witches and goblins creating pure and terrifying havoc. When mostly just a night of fire, dance, feast, drink and celebration. But yes the veil is thin. Yes spirits are present. And particularly some trickster fae 🧚🏼♀️ remember we are cautious around fairies as they are quite mischievous and distrusting of humans. They are coming out of a long winter slumber so might be feeling particularly disgruntled.
Walpurgisnacht falls on the night of April 30th. This is a threshold between seasons, where winter fully releases and spring takes hold. Traditionally, it was seen as a night when the veil between worlds felt thinner, a time associated with witches, spirits, and the unseen moving a little closer to the surface.
Historically, people would light fires to ward off negative energy and welcome protection, growth, and renewal. It wasn’t just about fear of the unknown, it was about acknowledging it, and choosing how to meet it.
There’s something powerful about this night. It sits right on the edge of change. Not quite one season, not fully the next.
And that’s what makes it meaningful.
It’s a moment to clear out what’s been lingering, to be honest about what you’re carrying, and to decide what you’re bringing forward with you. Particularly impactful with the Scorpio full Moon.
You don’t need to do anything elaborate.
Light a candle. Step outside. Take a breath. But if you want to be more elaborate and honour the time, have a bonfire. Beltane is a fire festival after all.
Notice what feels like it’s ending.
Notice what feels ready to begin. Honour your ancestors. Honour nature. Honour what needs to be left behind.
In present day Walpurgisnacht is a day for witches to step out loud and proud. Own who you are as we no longer need to be persecuted for our beliefs. So happy Witches Night friends 🦇🖤✨
